What are agents looking for?
Seventeen is the ideal age to take-up modelling, although some agents are prepared to sign up girls as young as 12. It is unlikely for girls older than 20 to be taken on, but don’t give up hope because it is the exception rather than the rule.
There are thousands of model agencies and all represent a different 'look'. Healthy, quirky, sexy, pretty, unusual and commercial (conventionally pretty but bland), are all styles that are very much in demand.
It helps to be realistic about your look. If people say you are pretty then you should consider a commercial agency that will slot you into 'lifestyle' advertising shoots where you'll represent the girl everyone wants to be - but don't expect to get the Channel campaign.
If you want to be a fashion model then unusual features will help. That is why girls who consider themselves ugly are astonished when they are 'scouted' by model agents.
Good skin, teeth and a cheerful personality are also key requirements. Modelling is often tedious and hours can be incredibly long. Only a well-adjusted, mature person can cope with this and it can also be a lonely profession.
What happens once I am signed up?
Just because you are on an agent’s books doesn’t mean you will get work. The agent’s job is to send your card and book to prospective clients (the courier bills come out of your fees) and send you on castings.
Only when a client books you for a job will you get to work.
